Planting Workshop at the Kelsick Centre
14th March 2020
Members of AAFAF held a successful day of workshops with 40 fellow Ambleside residents Saturday in the Kelsick Centre. The morning’s workshop gave away free hand-made window boxes which attendees were helped to fill with herbs and pollinating plants.
In the afternoon a demonstration by Luke Evans from The Samling, showed us how to sow micro-salads, which are a tasty and speedy way to enhance our cooking! Then master composter Pete Martin explained how to make compost which is an important part of plant growing. This was followed by practical demonstrations of how to grow edible plants, with expert growers answering attendees’ questions.
Fuelled by delicious cakes from Rattle Ghyll the day provided enjoyable learning for everyone who took part. Learning how to grow plants that will attract bees and other pollinators, and grow edible plants such as herbs, lettuces and potatoes is going to be one way in which many of us can mitigate the impact of the climate changes we're all experiencing.

Big Plant Giveaways at Ambleside Parish Centre
Fourth annual event on 27 May 2023
After the success of the planting workshop in March 2020 we have now held three further events to celebrate plants and growing and all things leafy, flowery and edible.
AAFAF members grew and gave away young vegetable plants, herbs and pollinator friendly flowering plants to residents of Ambleside and the surrounding district, with experienced gardeners on hand with help and advice. This year we held a shorter event with more plants to give away and more visitors than ever. Nevertheless well before the end almost all had been gratefully received and taken away to be planted and hopefully to thrive. This year we had the added possibility to make bug hotels to attract beneficial insects into gardens.
While all plants were given away for free many people made donations. Several AAFAF members made cakes and served tea and coffee and a raffle was held of items given by local shopkeepers. A total of about £400 was raised to further AAFAF's work in Ambleside.
As an additional bonus a number of new members joined AAFAF during the afternoon.
