The 2024 Big Plant Giveaway
On 25th May we held our fourth annual Big Plant Giveaway at the Parish Centre, and our most successful one yet. Between 1pm and 2pm the plants came through the doors in their singles and dozens, grown by a multitude of amateur gardeners from Ambleside and the surrounding area. There were vegetable, fruit and flowering plants as well as small shrubs and trees. So many in fact that instead of counting the number of plants we counted the number of large tables that they were spread out on as ten. A novel gift this year was bundles of bamboos for plant supports that were soon snapped up.
Then at 2pm all those looking for plants for their gardens began to arrive in even larger numbers and by close of play at 4pm essentially all plants had gone.
While all was free, many visitors were kind enough to make donations to support the work of AAFAF, whose members freely gave their time and effort to grow the plants, make the cakes and helped on the day.

More experienced gardeners were on hand as usual to help visitors choose and to give advice on where and how to set plants. Many were keen to try their hand at fruit and vegetables for the first time, one of the objectives of holding the plant giveaway.
Learning how to make your own compost was a feature again this year as was the opportunity to pot up herbs to take away. For children there were tables to carry out art and craft activities and to make a bug hotel from lengths of bamboo set in tubes. Many visitors stayed long enough to have a cup of tea and a cake. Some AAFAF members who took part are shown in the slide show. |
